Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Now Effective in Schools?

In Australia, a Mandurah private school recently told the parents of a 7 year old girl that she would not have been allowed to attend their school, had they known that her father was gay.

While Foundation Christian College has not explicitly kicked this child out of the school, they have told her father that she will only be allowed to continue to attend if she does not talk about her gay dads.

Now hold up one second. This sounds an awful lot like that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that we used to use in the military. Are you telling me that this school is now applying this to a 7 year old?! She doesn't even know any better! This girl doesn't see what the school thinks is wrong. All she did was talk about her family, and now her school attendance is in jeopardy?

The principal has claimed that if this young girl's father had made it known during his interview that he was gay, his daughter would never have been accepted to his school. He has also informed the father that his daughter may find a "better fit" at a different school.

The father has since removed his daughter from this private school, and enrolled her in a public one. However, this decision has not come without guilt.

"Why does my daughter have to go through this and lose her best friends due to the person I am?
"I carry a lot of guilt and I hate that my daughter has to deal with her dad not being accepted."

What do you think about this?

  1. It's such a shame that a young girl is basically being taught to be ashamed of who she is raised by and who loves her the most. It must also be confusing for a 7 year old to establish her own views when so many people are implementing their own personal opinion.

  2. On a positive note, the baby picture made me laugh though.
